Wedding Photography at The Morritt Country House Hotel

Morritt Arms Wedding near Barnard Castle
Howard and Gemma's wonderful winter wedding at the Morritt Country House Hotel at Greta Bridge was an intimate and cosy affair despite the sub-zero weather! They were married at Kirby Hill's Church of St Michael and All Angels and made their way to the reception at the Morritt Country House Hotel in Greta Bridge in the bride’s father's vintage Morgan car He must be very trusting to let anyone drive his classic car in thick snow! The winter weather made for great wedding photography.

The Morritt Arms as seen today dates from the late 1800s, although it is said to have been built on a Roman settlement. Throughout the 17th century and the development of a regular post delivery by mail coach, Greta Bridge became the second overnight stop on the London-Carlisle route. The Morritt was one of three inns in the once-bustling Greta Bridge, which included the George on the bridge on the other side of the river and the New Inn, which is now Thorpe Farm. Charles Dickens visited Greta Bridge in 1839 when researching Nicholas Nickelby. He wished to highlight the hardship inflicted by certain Yorkshire schools on their boys and so fame came to Dotheboys Hall in Bowes, which is still visible today along with the headmaster's grave in Bowes Church Cemetery. Dickens stayed at one of the inns in Greta Bridge and in the novel, that inn was the meeting point between Nicholas and Wackford Squeers.
