Built
in 1881 on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and overlooking the
Cleveland Hills the former Kirklevington Hall was home to an engineering
family, the Richardsons of Hartlepool. Following the passing of the
only surviving member of the family in 1940, the estate was sold to
a new private owner, only to be requisitioned by the army towards
the end of World War II. The hotel took its current name after it
was home to the county's Jjudges when they were on circuit to Middlesbrough
courts, during the 1970s.
By 1989 the circuit judges no longer required the hall and it was
acquired by the Downs family who began an extensive refurbishment
programme in 1994 when it became Judges. This included the landscaping
of the beautiful gardens, graceful lawns and picturesque river, which
meanders across the estate via waterfalls and under ornate bridges.
There is also a Victorian walled garden which makes an interesting
venue for photography. As a wedding photographer it is one of my favourite
venues.
